At a roundtable discussion, Laurence Rimbeuf and Guillaume Pitron highlighted the current situation and trends in the global metals market. While China has established a dominant position, European countries have made the political and industrial choice to outsource their extraction and refining activities — a decision was driven by the desire for lower costs, and to avoid the environmental cost of mining.

The issue of price volatility was also discussed. Given all these challenges, Laurence Rimbeuf explained, "Industry players will need to demonstrate mineral intelligence, understand their environment, and be aware of new players on market." This is especially true since the mining industry is concentrated in a few countries that show little concern for social and environmental regulations. Due to a lack of knowledge about their supply chain, companies are putting themselves at risk in the public eye.

Laurence Rimbeuf emphasized that, "Companies must take responsibility for ethical sourcing, but this requires knowing more about their supply chain and to explore far back into the value chain."
